About this course

This course teaches experienced financial planners a transferable methodology for advising clients whose financial lives span borders — primarily Americans living a life abroad, or clients who otherwise hold substantial investment assets in the US. Every module is built around a reusable analytical framework the learner can apply to that client base, regardless of the specific country pairing involved. The focus is on showing advisors what questions to ask, what obstacles to anticipate, and how to serve a client in a competent, ethical, compliant matter with a team of country specialists specific to the client’s circumstances.

‍

Who it's for:

  • Experienced advisors, CFP® professionals, and financial planners with some existing cross-border exposure — this is not an introductory course.
  • Advisors with an identified client country pairing (e.g., US/Australia, US/Mexico).
  • Advisors at ensemble firms building cross-border into a firm specialty/niche.
  • Planners in markets where cross-border questions "keep coming up" (e.g., NYC, DC, other international hubs).
  • Planners with personal lived experience (lived abroad, immigration background, cross-border marriage) looking to formalize that into a professional specialty.

‍

Suggested Knowledge of Experience to Start this Course:

  • Completion of the Global Financial Planning Essentials course (put in link to register)
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a financial services firm that serves cross-border clients.

What you'll learn

Program length: 7 modules, released on a staggered schedule from January through June 2027.

A blended program — a blend of Academic prereaders and self-paced recorded webinars with practitioners in the field, as well as 7 Live Sessions facilitated in a case study method, examining module topics based on different country approaches. These will be led by practitioner subject-matter experts (SMEs) with real cross-border experience.

Each module follows the same four-part structure:

  1. Pre-work — Reader: A concise, academic prereader (roughly 10–20 pages) tied directly to that module's learning objectives, plus supplemental source material.s
  2. Pre-work — Recorded lesson: A prerecorded video  from the topic’s Subject Matter Expert (SME), focused on concepts and case examples rather than country-specific trivia, built to stay valid for 3+ years. This provides a framework of how to think about cross-border issues.
  3. Live session (60–90 minutes): A live, SME-facilitated case study and Q&A held during business hours — opening with a short SME introduction, moving into Q&A on the pre-work, and spending the bulk of the time on a facilitated case-study discussion drawn from the SME's real client experience, including breakout discussion for larger cohorts.
  4. Knowledge check: A short assessment (multiple-choice) tied back to that module's learning objectives.
